What is Volume Profile?
Volume Profile is a charting tool that displays trading activity over a specified period at specific price levels. Unlike traditional volume indicators showing total volume, it shows the *distribution* of volume. This creates a 'profile' revealing where the most trading occurred, identifying key price levels where buyers and sellers have shown the most interest. It’s a powerful tool for understanding market structure and potential support/resistance areas.
How it Works
The indicator builds a histogram representing volume traded at each price level within the selected timeframe. The highest volume nodes indicate areas of significant agreement between buyers and sellers, often acting as magnets for price. The 'Point of Control' (POC) is the price level with the highest volume, representing the 'fair value' price. Volume is displayed horizontally, showing the amount traded at each price.
Trading Signals
Traders use Volume Profile to identify potential support and resistance. High Volume Nodes (HVNs) often act as support on pullbacks or resistance on rallies. The POC can be a target for price reversion. Low Volume Nodes (LVNs) represent areas of weak interest and can indicate potential breakout points. Breakouts *through* HVNs with increasing volume confirm the move, while failures to break suggest continuation of the prior trend.
Basic Settings
Key settings include 'Timeframe' (the period for which the profile is calculated), 'Source' (typically close price), and 'Number of Boxes'. Increasing the number of boxes creates a more detailed profile, but can also introduce noise. Experiment with different settings to find what works best for your trading style and the specific asset you're analyzing. Remember to consider the context of the overall market trend.
