Chaikin Money Flow (CMF)

Chaikin Money Flow (CMF) is a technical indicator measuring buying and selling pressure using price and volume.

Full Description

What is Chaikin Money Flow?

The Chaikin Money Flow (CMF) is a technical analysis indicator that assesses the volume-weighted average of price movement over a specified period. Developed by Bill Chaikin, it aims to determine if money is flowing into or out of a security. Unlike simple volume indicators, CMF considers both price and volume, providing a more nuanced view of market sentiment. It's categorized as a volume indicator, offering insights into the strength of a trend.

How it Works

CMF calculates the Money Flow Volume (MFV) by multiplying the typical price (average of high, low, and close) by the volume. Then, it calculates a ratio based on the accumulation/distribution line. Positive values suggest buying pressure, while negative values indicate selling pressure. The indicator oscillates between +100 and -100, with values closer to +100 indicating strong accumulation and values closer to -100 suggesting strong distribution.

Trading Signals

A CMF value crossing above zero suggests buying pressure is increasing, potentially signaling a bullish trend. Conversely, a cross below zero indicates increasing selling pressure and a possible bearish trend. Divergences between CMF and price can also be significant; bullish divergence (price makes lower lows, CMF makes higher lows) suggests a potential trend reversal to the upside. Overbought (above +0.8) and oversold (below -0.8) conditions can also provide trading signals.

Basic Settings

The primary setting for CMF is the period length, typically set to 21. This determines the number of periods used in the calculation. Shorter periods are more sensitive to price changes, while longer periods provide a smoother, less reactive signal. TradingView allows easy adjustment of this period. Experimentation is key to finding the optimal setting for different assets and timeframes. This is for educational purposes only, not financial advice.
